Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation
(BRTC) gives utmost importance on the Environmental issues. Scientific
& Research oriented project/works are carried out in BRTC
to make the city environment free of vehicular pollution. One
of such important TA Project named as “Urban Transport &
Environmental Improvement Project (TA No. 3297-BAN)” was
carried out by BRTC in the year 2001-2002, financed by Asian Development
Bank & supported by Intercontinental consultants and Technocrats
Pvt. Ltd. India in association with Balloffet Entranco, USA and
local consultants. This Urban Transport and Environment Improvement
Study (UTEIS) was an effort to identify and prioritize problem
areas and to develop policies and strategies to improve air quality
in Dhaka & other major Cities in Bangladesh. PM 10 has been
selected as the pollutant of concern for the action plan, although
potential emission reductions were estimated for six major air
pollutants. In particular, carbon monoxide will also be greatly
reduced if the action plan is put into place. Cost effectiveness
and potential health benefits were used to evaluate action plan
components, and their efficiency, effectiveness, completeness
and acceptability were assessed. |
To combat the pollution situation,
BRTC supports the government policies and maintaining its vehicular
fleet accordingly. Introduction of CNG run single and Double Decker
buses are in its priority programmes at the present time.
Despite that to boost up the intention of the private operators,
it has also introduced CNG three wheelers (small baby taxis) in
Dhaka and one 62 seater single deck bus in the city route in Dhaka.
This attempt has successful result and the private operators are
coming ahead with CNG run 3 wheelers and buses.
In the newly adapted national land transportation policy, it has
been stated that BRTC will conduct scientific research works on
modes of transport, engine types and security related matters
in the road transport system for the country. BRTC is capable
of performing such R&D activities.
BRTC has the potential to execute any scientific research work
in relation to Automotive transport, environmental issue in particulars.
